Hay Guide β€” The Most Important Food

βœ… Timothy Hay β€” Gold Standard
The best hay for adult rabbits. High fibre, correct calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, promotes dental wear and healthy gut motility. Should make up the vast majority of a rabbit’s diet.
βœ… Orchard Grass Hay
Excellent alternative or addition to timothy. Softer texture β€” good for picky rabbits or those with sensitive teeth. Similar nutritional profile to timothy.
βœ… Oat Hay
Good enrichment hay. Can be mixed with timothy. Slightly higher in carbohydrates β€” use as part of a varied hay selection rather than the only hay.
⚠️ Meadow Hay
Mixed wild grass hay. Good variety and enrichment. Quality varies by source. Fine to use but not as consistent as timothy. Good for encouraging foraging behaviour.
❌ Alfalfa Hay β€” Adults Only
Very high in calcium and protein β€” only appropriate for young rabbits under 7 months, pregnant or nursing does. Adult rabbits fed alfalfa regularly develop bladder sludge and kidney problems.

Essential Rabbit Feeding Tips

🌾

Hay is non-negotiable. 80–90% of your rabbit’s diet must be unlimited good-quality hay. It is not optional β€” hay maintains healthy gut motility and prevents the deadly condition GI stasis.

πŸ₯¬

Rotate your greens. Offer at least 3–4 different leafy greens daily. Rotation prevents overexposure to any single compound and ensures nutritional variety.

🚫

Pellets are not a meal β€” they are a supplement. Many owners dramatically overfeed pellets. Too many pellets means your rabbit fills up and stops eating enough hay.

🍎

Fruit is a treat, not food. Maximum 1–2 teaspoons of fruit per day. The natural sugars in fruit can disrupt gut bacteria and contribute to obesity.

πŸ’§

Fresh water always. Change water daily. Some rabbits prefer a bowl over a bottle β€” try both. Hydration is essential for kidney and digestive health.

🐰

Introduce new foods slowly. Change no more than one new food at a time and wait 48 hours to check for soft caecotropes or digestive upset before adding another.
