Cat Hydration Calculator 💧
Daily water needs for your cat — by weight, diet & life stage
💡 Why hydration matters for cats
Cats evolved as desert animals with a naturally low thirst drive — they are designed to get most of their water from prey. This means domestic cats on dry food are often chronically dehydrated without showing obvious signs. Chronic low-level dehydration is one of the leading contributors to feline kidney disease, urinary tract problems and bladder crystals. Knowing your cat’s daily water needs is one of the most important things you can do for their long-term health. 🐱

How to Increase Your Cat’s Water Intake
Use a cat water fountain. Cats are instinctively attracted to moving water — a circulating fountain can increase water intake by up to 50% in some cats.
Switch to wet or raw food. Dry food contains only 8–10% moisture. Wet food is 70–80% water. Raw food is 65–70%. This single change makes the biggest difference.
Add water to food. Add a tablespoon of warm water or low-sodium chicken broth (no onion or garlic) to wet or raw meals to boost moisture intake easily.
Place water bowls away from food. In the wild, cats instinctively avoid water near prey — placing the bowl in a different room often encourages more drinking.
Change water daily and wash the bowl. Cats are sensitive to taste — stale water or biofilm on bowls puts them off drinking. Fresh water twice daily is ideal.
Try a wide, shallow bowl. Many cats dislike their whiskers touching bowl edges (whisker fatigue). A wide, flat bowl or saucer can make a noticeable difference.
