Raw Feeding Your Cat? Here’s Why a Guide Isn’t Enough
By Jolandie Koen — Certified Pet Nutritionist, Animal Naturopathy Practitioner & Animal Aromatherapy Specialist
I want to tell you about a conversation I had recently that changed how I thought about raw feeding education.
A client of mine breeds Maine Coons. She is meticulous — her kittens are raised from birth on a species-appropriate raw diet, carefully weighed, transitioned gradually, and sent home with detailed instructions. She puts months of work into every litter.
And then the kittens go home.
Within two weeks, a pattern repeats itself. The new kitten parents feed the raw food a few times, run into a question they can’t answer, get confused about temperature or quantities or what to do when the kitten refuses a meal — and quietly go back to kibble. Not because they don’t care. Because they don’t have the support they need in the moment they need it.
That conversation is why I built Feline RawStart™.
The Gap Between Knowing and Doing
Most raw feeding guides — including the excellent ones — are written to be read once. You read them before you start, you absorb what you can, and then you’re on your own when the real questions come up at 7am while your kitten is staring at a cold bowl of food and refusing to eat it.
The questions that come up in real raw feeding life are not the big philosophical ones. They’re the small, practical, urgent ones:
How much do I feed a 3.2kg kitten, exactly? Is papaya safe for cats? The food has been sitting out for 25 minutes — is it still safe? My cat won’t eat cold food — how do I warm it without destroying the nutrients? I found something around her ears that looks like coffee grounds — what is it and what do I do?
These questions deserve instant, accurate answers. Not a 40-minute search through Facebook groups and contradictory blog posts.
What Feline RawStart™ Is
Feline RawStart™ is a comprehensive digital tool — not a guide, not a PDF, not a static resource. It’s an interactive companion that lives on your device and grows with your cat from their very first raw meal through their senior years.
Here’s what’s inside:
Cat Profile Set up a complete profile for your cat — name, breed, date of birth, weight, sex, neuter status and activity level. The tool automatically calculates your cat’s life stage from their date of birth and adjusts every recommendation accordingly.
Meal Builder & Portion Calculator Enter your cat’s weight and life stage and receive their exact daily food amount in grams. The BARF ratio calculator shows the correct breakdown of muscle meat, organ meat, raw bone and plant matter — not as a generic percentage, but calculated for your cat’s specific stage. Build today’s meal from a database of 50+ whole foods with nutritional notes on every ingredient.
Food Safety & Temperature Guide This is one of the sections I’m most proud of. Cats evolved as hunters whose prey is always at body temperature — approximately 37–38°C. Cold food straight from the fridge signals “dead prey” to a cat’s instincts, and many cats will simply refuse it. The tool includes a visual temperature guide, six warming methods rated safe, caution or dangerous, food safety timing by ambient temperature (critical in warm climates), and seasonal adjustments for summer, autumn, winter and spring.
Food Safety Checker Search any food, ingredient, herb, fruit, vegetable or household item to instantly see whether it is safe, feed with caution, or dangerous for cats. Over 80 entries, all with cat-specific explanations. Because “is avocado safe for cats?” and “can cats eat strawberries?” are questions that deserve a clear, immediate answer — not another Google search.
Safe Herbs Ten herbs that genuinely support feline health, with benefits, how to use them and correct amounts. Six herbs and plants to avoid entirely, with toxicity notes. Because cats metabolise plants very differently from dogs and humans, and the wrong herb can cause serious harm.
Breed Library Breed-specific nutritional notes, health predispositions and portion adjustments for ten breeds including Maine Coon, Persian, Siamese, Ragdoll, British Shorthair, Abyssinian, Bengal and Norwegian Forest Cat. Because a Maine Coon growing until age four has very different nutritional needs from a domestic shorthair at the same weight.
Health Tracker This is where Feline RawStart™ becomes a true lifetime companion. Log your cat’s weight with a visual growth chart, keep a daily health journal tracking energy, appetite, stool quality, coat and eyes, record every vet visit with diagnosis and medications, and track milestones from the first raw bone accepted to desexing to birthdays. Your data saves automatically to your device every time you use it.
Natural Parasite Care Holistic prevention and treatment protocols for fleas and ticks, worms, ear mites, ringworm, mosquitoes and flies. Each section covers natural treatment options, safety considerations, environmental control, and when to seek veterinary care. Because natural parasite management requires specific knowledge — cats are uniquely sensitive to many compounds that are safe for dogs and humans.
Who This Tool Is For
Feline RawStart™ was built for:
- New kitten parents bringing home a raw-raised kitten and wanting to continue what the breeder started — confidently
- Cat owners transitioning from kibble or wet food to a raw or species-appropriate diet
- Experienced raw feeders who want a structured tracking system for health records and weight monitoring
- Anyone who wants to feed their cat better and needs clear, reliable information at their fingertips
If you’ve ever found yourself Googling at 6am whether a food is safe for your cat, or wondering whether the temperature in summer means you need to change how long you leave food out — this tool was built for you.
A Note on Temperature — Because It Matters More Than You Think
I want to address the food temperature question directly because it’s one of the most common reasons raw feeding fails in the early weeks.
Cats are obligate carnivores who evolved hunting warm prey. When food comes straight from the fridge at 4°C, many cats will sniff it and walk away. This is not fussiness — it is biology. Their instincts are telling them the food is not fresh.
The ideal serving temperature for raw cat food is 35–38°C — body temperature. This means raw food always needs to be brought to at least room temperature before serving, and ideally gently warmed using a warm water bath method. The tool walks you through exactly how to do this safely — including the methods that destroy nutrients (yes, the microwave defrost setting is one of them) and the methods that preserve them perfectly.
In summer, this also cuts both ways — food sitting out at 30°C becomes unsafe faster than you might think. The tool includes a seasonal food safety timing guide for exactly this reason.
Your Cat’s Entire Lifetime, In One Place
One of the things I’m most pleased about with Feline RawStart™ is that it grows with your cat. The kitten who comes home at 8 weeks will one day be a senior at 9 years, and then a geriatric at 14. Their needs change at every stage, and the tool adjusts with them.
The health records you start keeping today become genuinely valuable years from now — when your vet asks about weight history, when you notice a pattern in the health journal, when you want to look back at when a particular change in appetite began.
Once-Off Purchase · N$650 · Instant Access
Feline RawStart™ is a once-off purchase at N$650. There is no subscription, no monthly fee, and no expiry date. You buy it once and use it for your cat’s entire lifetime.
Your data saves automatically to your device every time you use it. To keep your records, always access the tool from the same device and browser, and bookmark the page after your first login.
Your cat deserves to be fed well — for their entire life. This tool makes that easier than it has ever been.
